This document discusses the challenges of treating burn injuries and their sequelae in developing countries. It notes that burn injuries represent a major health and social problem. While treatment is difficult, long, and expensive, resources for treatment are limited. Improved funding, facilities, and human resources are needed for prevention, acute treatment, rehabilitation, and surgical treatment of sequelae. The document describes traditional and emerging issues in treating sequelae, including improving function and aesthetics. It discusses how the public health system in Chile has focused resources on high-impact conditions, improving access, timeliness, quality and funding for burn treatment. This has increased survival rates but also yields patients with more severe sequelae requiring plastic surgery techniques and rehabilitation.
